What Is Calling? – A Podcast Series

imgresCalling. It’s a word more and more of us are thinking about, and using in our day to day lives.

Calling speaks to our desire for purpose and meaning. It causes us to ponder what we really wish to do with our lives. It whispers to us in our imaginations, and makes us wonder whether our life might just be about something bigger than ourselves.

Calling and vocation can, however, be easily misunderstood.

So every day on my podcast this week, I’m going to be unpacking this subject, and these a bit more.

You see, many often talk about calling in terms of one calling for life. These people argue you only have one calling and that’s it. And if we don’t find it, then we’re in trouble. Even worse, if we get it wrong or do the wrong thing, God won’t be pleased.

And often, for Christians, it has to be something we don’t want to do, that God kinda has to co-erce us into against our will. If it’s something we want to do, something we love?

Well, that’s not allowed is it?

Truth is, these are myths, misunderstandings and misinterpretations of what calling really is, and can be. And it’s so important that we understand this concept, because understanding calling and vocation can be one of the keys to discovering meaning and purpose to our lives.

These myths and misunderstandings need to be unpacked and explored. So every day this week there will be a new, short episode of my podcast ‘James Talks’. One each day, unpacking different ideas about calling –

What calling is & why it’s more than just a job

What we begin before we start exploring our calling fully

Why it’s good – and totally fine – to have fun with our calling

How following curiosity & the inner ache helps us find our calling

Why we should never ask permission before stepping out into our calling

image-03-10-15-16-15I’ve been working on these for a while, and I’m so excited to share them with you. To keep up with them, subscribe to my podcast on iTunes and get them downloaded automatically. They’re also available on Podbean. You can find the direct link to today’s episode on Podbean here.

This podcast series is part of this month’s synCREATE theme of calling of vocation – where everyone, everywhere, is invited to create literally anything inspired by those words and themes. You can then share it on social media with the hashtag #synCREATE and on the synCREATE Facebook group.

Once you’ve listened to the podcast, there is video playback of our live blab call with myself, Lisa Delay and author Andi Combo, related to calling, and you can find that here  – and it will soon be available on the synCREATE page on this site.

The first episode of this series in below, and over the week I’ll be posting all the links to the series below, and on the James Talks page on this site.

So check out the first episode of the podcast series either on iTunes or Podbean or follow the link below – today I explore the question ‘What Is Calling?”.

Talk soon,

James.

It seems to me that a calling is something you do want to do – that’s part of what makes it a calling. The calling itself makes you want to do it. That doesn’t mean it’s easy. Thanks for this, James!

While reading this blog the part about God coercing us to our calling reminded me of Job. He was a prime example of God’s determination. The question is, “Do we recognize our calling?” Let’s all pay attention.
